HA Staff Report
It was a
disappointing night for Mid-State Conference teams as the season opened Friday
evening. The league went just 2-5 versus non-Conference foes in week one.
The two
winners were Plainfield and Martinsville. The Quakers looked impressive in a
30-14 dismantling of Hendricks County rival Danville. Meanwhile, Martinsville
showed offensive punch that has been lacking in recent seasons by crushing
Indianapolis Manual 54-6.
Several
squads suffered close setbacks. Whiteland, last year’s conference champion,
fell to New Palestine on the Dragons’ home field 22-16. Decatur Central fell by
a single point at Franklin Central 20-19 and Mooresville lost a defensive battle
with Lebanon 14-7.
The
remaining losses were not nearly as close. Franklin fell to Northview 33-8 and
Greenwood was subdued by Columbus East 37-14. Actually, Greenwood can take a
lot of positives from their battle with the Olympians. Columbus East is ranked
among the top teams in 5A and has been a defensive powerhouse in recent
seasons.
This coming
Friday night’s schedule is highlighted by the traditional brawl between
Martinsville and Bloomington South.
